NEWSLETTER AUGUST 2026

Pub News

As reported in the July newsletter, both the Washington Arms and the Ivy House closed for refurbishment. The former now reopened. There was a smell of freshly laid carpet during a brief visit on July 22nd. Two cask ales were on, Maxim Mosaic and Anarchy Blonde Star. I had the Mosaic and it was spot on, very well kept. The Arms is now part of Ameva Leisure based in South Shields. Other pubs in their portfolio include The Lord Nelson, Jarrow, The Mechanics and The Rattler both in South Shields.

The Ivy House is due to reopen on August 10th. A photo on social media showed four handpulls on the bar.

A micropub is due to open in Seaburn. Called The Little un, this was a former sweetshop on Sea Road.

Not so good news now. The landlord of The Cottage Tavern retired at the end of July. The pub is closed awaiting a new appointment. An article is planned for the next issue of CAMRA Angle.
